Improve your Self Esteem – It makes you who you truly think you are

“Our self-image, strongly held, essentially determines what we become” – Maxwell Maltz

Self-esteemYour self-image is what you feel you are within your mind. If you have a good self-image, you are bound to feel confident and good about yourself. Alternatively, If you have an inferior self-image, you are bound to feel inferior about yourself and have very little confidence. Our personal opinion about ourself affects our self-confidence and self-esteem and is crucial to our emotional, mental and physical health. It defines how we live our lives and interact with the society.

Indeed, it is important to improve your self-esteem as it makes you who you truly think you are!

What influences Self Esteem

  • Childhood – Home & School

Our childhood is when we start forming our self-image. A lot is learnt and imbibed into our minds as we look at our parents act and feel the way they do. We imitate their attitudes and reactions as we watch the world through their eyes. Did your parents role-model themselves as having a healthy self-esteem?

At school, relationships with your friends, teachers and administrators influence your self-esteem. Experiences with school work, sports, extracurricular activities etc play an important role in shaping the kind of person you will grow to be.

Think about all the people in your life growing up and how they might have influenced your self-esteem. If you come up with negative influences take the time to let it go. Put your past behind you and move forward knowing that you are in control of how you feel about yourself.

  • Society

Society is another major contributor influencing our self-esteem as we have people around us all the time and telling us what to do and what not to do, how to do and how not to do, etc. There are expectations on what kind of job you should be doing and whom you should be marrying and what kind of clothes to wear etc. The nature of the people you surround yourselves with modify you.

Think of all the times you have been influenced by the society and thought that you were not good enough to do something. Do what you feel is right at such moments and this will boost your self-confidence.

  • People around You

We spend a lot of time with family, friends, colleagues at work and many people who we don’t even know. Are they supportive of you, hold you up in good esteem, cheer you up or are there many who bring you down, spread negative vibes? Are the people you spend time with, contributing to you having healthy self-image of yourself?

Surround yourself with people who are happy and creating a positive atmosphere, who are supportive in your good and bad times. Set boundaries from people who send out negative vibes, not because they want to but they themselves have a low self-esteem and blame all the external conditions for their internal thoughts.

  • Media

In today’s time, we are constantly surrounded by media advertisements, be it on television, in magazines, on the hoardings, on the radio, and morever through social media on our phones and computers! These ads play games with our mind making us feel and look good should we decide to purchase the wares. They give us a feeling of being inferior the way we are and the way to feel better is to purchase those products being advertised. They make us feel that we want to look good like the models promoting those products and we give in to our temptations acknowledging the fact that we have a weak self-image.

Why is Self Esteem important

Self-EsteemNow that we know what influences our self-esteem, we ought to understand why is self-esteem important. Self-esteem is based on our self-worthiness, which is a rating we giving ourselves based on the influences of the external world. If we consider ourselves not to be worthy of something that we desire, then unfortunately we have a low self-esteem.

Do not underestimate the importance of self-esteem. It changes how you feel about and value yourself. It affects your confidence, and this can affect your success and thinking in a big way. High self-esteem is something that lifts you up in life. It gives you the feeling and the desire to achieve your goals. When you have high self-esteem, you’re naturally happier, more confident, and more successful.

When you have low self-esteem, you naturally hang your head down low, find it more challenging interacting with other people, and you’re naturally less happy, less confident, and less successful.

So self-esteem is important, because it affects your entire experience of life.

How to develop your Self Esteem

Self-EsteemWe are aware that we need to build our self-worth thus helping to boost our self-esteem. But self-esteem is something that varies depending on the current state of our feeling and it is not easy to work on and develop our self-esteem.

Below are some steps that we can take to build our self-worth and self-esteem:

  • Be compassionate to yourself and not self-critical

Many a time, we are self-critical and list all the negative qualities within us instead of looking at our positives. This damages our self-esteem and we need to realize to substitute this self-criticism with self-compassion. This is about being kind to yourself no matter what and that means being accepting of yourselves and letting go of the negativity that you see in yourself! Think of what you like about yourself and approve of yourself a little more. Listen to your gut… the inside invoice and say good things to yourself….” I deserve good things in my life; I am loving and confident; I am good at what I do” and so on. Be self-compassionate and your self-esteem will care of itself.

  • Accept Compliments

When we feel bad about ourselves, we tend to be more resistant towards compliments, even though that is when we need them most. This is because we feel we are not worthy of those compliments. So, set a goal for yourself to accept compliments when you receive them, even if they make you feel uncomfortable. Prepare yourself to use the simplest of responses such as “Thank You” and “It’s very kind of you”, when you receive compliments for your work or for the way you look or treat others etc. Over a period of time, you will get over the feeling of uncomfortableness and this will be an indication of your self-esteem getting stronger.

  • Work on your talents

Everybody has talents. We only fail to nurture them over time and our talents get deep hidden within ourselves Take time to go back and think what made us happy when we were children, what made us happy as we grew to be adolescents and then what makes us happy in our work and our relationships. Find those talents and nurture them. It could be as simple as writing, singing, speaking, cooking, dancing etc. Give time to your talents and your self-esteem will grow, probably giving you an opportunity for a side-hustle as well!

  • Stop blaming yourself and affirm your real worth

So what if you have made mistakes in your past, being insensitive to friends and relatives, have debts you feel ashamed of? That’s OK, move on. Stop blaming yourself and live in the present.

Affirm your real worth by believing in your actions. When you are confident in your actions, you will do better at the things you do. When you achieve more accomplishments from these actions your self-esteem rises even more and you begin to feel that you are good at things which leads to further happiness.

  • Use Positive Affirmations

What you say matters. You can be your biggest critic or your own best supporter. Self esteem affirmations can come in here, big time. You have to convince yourself or your own self-worth by saying good words to yourself.

This could be difficult when your self-esteem is low. But start by changing your feelings, thinking of the times when you were happy and the times when you felt good about yourselves. Change your state of feelings and good words will start flowing.

Self Esteem & Success

Self-esteem has a vital role to play for your success in life. When you believe in yourself you are more likely to be more confident and take action. Confidence allows you to stand up for yourself and helps you to find new opportunities. Self-Esteem leads to confidence and allows you to overcome your fears. Confident individuals set the bar high and aim high. Lack of confidence leads to weak goals, setting the bar too low, and mediocre results. You are stronger than you think. Confident people believe in success. And more importantly, they believe in their ability to succeed.

Self-EsteemBelieve in yourself. There is goodness and strength in everyone. You only have to find it and let it shine.

“Don’t ask yourself what the world needs, ask yourself what makes you come alive. And then go and do that. Because what the world needs is people who have come alive.”

– Howard Washington Thurman

Cultivate an Attitude of Gratitude

How many of us take the time to be grateful for what we have? Mostly we look for material pleasures we need, but fail to look at our lives and be grateful for what we have, because we do not value it. We go through life always thinking about what we don’t have and this makes us unhappy. Rather, we must be grateful for what we have, be it the smallest things, and this will make us happy by acknowledging the relations, time, love and so many other things that we neglect in our daily endeavor to live our lives!

What is Gratitude?Gratitude

A very apt definition comes from the Harvard Medical School, which says that gratitude is:

“a thankful appreciation for what an individual receives, whether tangible or intangible. With gratitude, people acknowledge the goodness in their lives … As a result, gratitude also helps people connect to something larger than themselves as individuals – whether to other people, nature, or a higher power”

Benedictine monk, Br. David Steindl-Rast, suggests that two qualities belong in our basic definition of gratitude. The first is appreciation: You recognize that something is valuable to you, which has nothing to do with its monetary worth. The second quality Br. David mentions is that gratitude is gratis: freely given to you.

Why is Gratitude important?

By being grateful, we realize that we have been blessed with the power to appreciate the beauty in our lives.

Some scientifically proven benefits of feeling grateful as follows:

  • Gratitude improves psychological health: Being grateful reduces the range of toxic emotions, from envy and hatred to frustration and regret. Robert Emmons, a leading gratitude researcher, has conducted multiple studies on the link between gratitude and well-being. His research confirms that gratitude effectively increases happiness and reduces depression.
  • Gratitude improves physical health: Being HappyGrateful people feel healthier than
other people and experience less body pains and aches, according to a study done.
  • Gratitude enhances relationships: Saying a simple “thank you” not only constitutes good manners, but showing appreciation can help you in your relationships at home and work. So whether you thank your spouse for cooking your meal or send a thank-you note to that colleague who helped you with a project, acknowledging other people’s contributions can lead to new opportunities.
  • Grateful people sleep better: Keep a Gratitide Journal and spend 15 minutes writing a few grateful sentiments before bed, and you may sleep better and longer.
  • Gratitude improves self-esteem: By being grateful, we start appreciating the little things around us and we are not envious or resentful about others who probably have a lot more than us, thus improving our self-esteem.

How to cultivate Gratitude in daily life

Be thankful for what you have; you’ll end up having more. If you concentrate on what you don’t have, you will never, ever have enough” – Oprah Winfrey

Cultivating gratitude is a choice that we need to make everyday as we take the small joys for granted and we forget to be thankful for those moments that make us happy. Consciously practicing gratitude defines a more positive outlook towards life.

Here are some ways to cultivate gratitude:

  • Maintain a Gratitude Journal: Begin the morning by journaling the things that you are grateful for. It could be simply that you are grateful to open your eyes today and enjoy a new day, watch the beautiful colors of the sky! JournalingIt could be difficult initially finding those things ro moments that we are grateful for but it will come with practice as there are so many things taken for granted that the less fortunate people cherish. Find atleast 5 things or moments you are grateful for. Continue doing this every morning or night and feel the difference.
  • Get inspired: Think of someone who you are grateful for having in your life, as an inspiration in some way. Think of the quality you appreciate in that person and inspire yourself to be like him or her.
  • Remember: All through the different stages of our lives, there have been people who have stood by us and done kind deeds. Go back into memory and remember them. They could be your parents, your siblings, your relatives, your friends, your colleagues or just some stranger who has helped you in some way or the other. Remember them and be grateful for having them.
  • Pay it forward: There are times, when you would like to repay someone who has done good for you. But there is nothing that you could do to match his/her kindness. In this case, pay it forward. Do a good deed for someone else without expecting anything in return. That’s the beauty of giving. Just do a random act of kindness possibly every day and be rest assured that you will get it back in bountiful – peace of mind, sound sleep, good health etc.
  • Practice gratitude with family: In today’s time, it is very difficult to have the complete family on the table at the same time for dinner. If this is possible, have each member of the family share one incident for which they are grateful today. This will help to cultivate the feeling of gratitude in children from a young age.

There are many other ways as well. Feel free to share your experiences in your comments.

Practice GratitudePractice gratitude

Practicing gratitude really helps to keep a positive attitude and see and feel all of the magic around you. I hope my content on cultivating gratitude encourages you to create your own ways of celebrating the magical moments that you would generally miss running through the daily chores of your life.

“Cultivate the habit of being grateful for every good thing that comes to you, and to give thanks continuously. And because all things have contributed to your advancement, you should include all things in your gratitude.” — Ralph Waldo Emerson

How to have faith in yourself to achieve your Goals

Setting Goals is important to know where we want to go in this journey called Life. But most of us do not have goals and live life as it comes or even if we set goals for us to achieve a good life, we give up on the way when we face challenges! We give up because we start doubting ourselves, lose our confidence and faith in what we could possibly achieve.

In today’s post, I write about how to have faith in yourself and believing that you can achieve what you want by following your dreams, your goals!

What is Faith?

The dictionary meaning of Faith is “Having complete trust or confidence inHave faith
someone or something”. That someone has to be yourself!

As per Napolean Hill, in his famous book “Think and Grow Rich“, Faith is the Head chemist of the mind. It is the state of mind which may be induced, or created, by affirmation or repeated instructions to the subconscious mind, through the principle of auto-suggestion.

In simple language, it is nothing but belief in yourself and the unseen that your goals, your dreams will come true.

Five ways to learn to believe in yourself

  • It’s Possible

Nothing is impossible. As the famous saying goes, “Even the word impossible says i m possible”. There is nothing that you cannot do what others can do. Everybody is this universe has access to the same resources that you have. It is upto you to make the best of these resources to achieve your goal and it is important to believe it’s possible.

Expect the best to happen and be positive that what you want is going to happen. The mind is a very powerful magnet and it attracts from the universe what you expect, whether positive or negative. Hence, expect only the positive and discipline your mind to filter out the negativity.

  • It’s Hard

If only Life was Easy, it would have been beautiful to live in an ideal world. But that is not the case and we know it. Many a time, everything is going well and then life catches you on the blind side. You get caught in the past thinking how beautiful life was, instead of thinking how to get back on track and live the life that you want to live. Have faith and fight back. Life is hard and you have to fight harder to remain positive and keep the faith.

  • You deserve to live your dreams

You and I deserve every bit of the life that we wish to live. Life’s not fair and it’s so right. Nobody said it would be fair to all. We dream, set goals. But we give up when we face challenges and go back to live the mediocre life which we are used to living.

Believing in ourselves is the start to progressing towards our goals. We can only believe when we know we deserve it!

  • Visualize it

This may sound strange initially, but on practicing “Visualization” on a regular basis, you will start to notice that things are happening that are getting you closer to your goals.

Visualize your goals, see them in your mind as if you already have achieved those goals. Feel them with all your senses – be it a beautiful home, magnificent car, relationships, perfect health conditions, wealth, vacations etc. Be sincere with your thoughts and attach emotions to your thoughts as this will invigorate you and the universe will respond to your thoughts and emotions.

Suddenly you will find yourself doing a lot more of things that you always wished to do but felt inhibited under your normal circumstances.

  • Face your Fears

We all have our fears, something that blocks us, holds us back from living Face your fearsour dreams. Fear is the number one factor which stops and totally defeats us when we are on path to achieving our goals. Fear of doubt, fear of low self-esteem, fear of having no belief, all this leads to having no faith in ourselves.

Look back at your lives. What is that you fear? What is keeping you from doing the things that you would like to do? Don’t condemn yourselves for having those fears. Acknowledge them, embrace them and move on… What you resist will persist!

Quoting Les Brown – Fear is False Expectations Appearing Real. We give our fears more powers than they deserve and permit them to govern our lives.

Face your fears again and again and again. Imagine the worst that can happen. Whatever doesn’t kill you, only makes you stronger.

Take Action

Take ActionTaking action is the most difficult of all. You may develop Faith, know that your goals are possible, have belief in yourself, visualize your goals and also face your fears. But knowing all this and taking no action at all puts you back into your comfort zone.

Find what it is that fuels your passion. Go for it with all your faith and you will see changes happening in your life. You will progress towards your goals. Be patient, persistent and positive. Take action towards your goals and you will be happy to live your life as you want it to be.

Keep progressing towards your freedom!

What to do when you feel Stuck in Life

Life is a journey. There are highs & lows, good & bad, happy & sad times. That’s the reality of Life.

But we got to realize that, it is during the Down moments is where Growth takes place. It is during the tough times that Character is built. Anybody can be happy and positive during the good times. But the real challenge is to grow and move forward when Life knocks you down.

And when life knocks us down, we get stuck in that moment not knowing what to do and emotions like fear, revenge, jealousy keep pulling us down into a spiral.

It does take courage and a lot of positivity to get ourselves out of the rut and in this article, I dwell on something that we can do to pull ourselves up and move on in Life.

Assess your Situation

Evaluate where you are. Assess yourself. What brought you here? What did you learn from it? Is there something you can change now that you couldn’t in the past?

As somebody said “Insanity is doing the same thing over and over again expecting different results”. Are you going through it or growing through it?

Assess your feelings for why you feel stuck – What emotion is weighing you down?

Forgive & Grow

We tend to carry our baggage/ mistakes from our past into our present. Clear your mind of unnecessary baggage.

Focus on what are you going to do now? Forgive your past as probably you did not know at that time if you could do those things better. Learn and grow from your mistakes. You can let the tragedy to destroy your life or grow from it. Declare an all-out war that you are going to get out of the rut.

Don’t stop, stay Busy

Don’t let challenges dictate terms to you. Push them aside and move towards your Goals. Don’t stop, stay busy, work on your plans. Continue to grow.

Help Somebody

Find somebody you can help. What you give is what you get. You will forget Helpyour sorrow and helplessness if you are able to help somebody and it will bring a feeling of pride and fullness.

Take time to meditate to clear your mind. Activate the thinker in you. Don’t allow your emotions to control you. Discipline your emotions and thoughts.

Take an example – Weeds don’t need any encouragement to grow. They just grow through the cracks on the ground. But Orchids & Roses need special processes for them to grow. Similarly you don’t need any motivation to be depressed or angry or jealous or hurt but need a lot of motivation to control those emotions and get over them.

Make a declaration

Make a declaration – that you are going to be stronger and better, stand up for your dreams. Go all out to have it. Say to yourself – I am going to do something about this situation

Expect things to get better. Your current situation is not here to stay but it will pass.

Envision your Future

We all go through life with the limited vision that we have or have been conditioned with. Realize and appreciate the fact that there is always a way out. Where there is a will, there is a way.

Take full responsibility for your life. Accept where you are and the responsibility that you will take yourself where you want to go. Say to yourself – “I got me here, I am getting myself out of this”.

Recreate yourself

Decide that you are going to change. Decide that you are going to stand up to Life. You are going to empower yourself. Say to yourself that these are temporary situations and I will evolve and grow. I will no longer be stuck in Life. I am in charge and will build a new me.

Go for walks, engage in reflective thinking, listen to upbeat music to recharge your batteries, read books, listen to tapes that help you motivate yourself.

Separate what you do from who you are. Things you did in the past cannot be changed. Look forward to grow by recreating yourself.

Describe your future self

Have a self-image of what you have always wanted to be. Write a description of the kind of person you want to be. What characteristics you would want to change from your current self? Study your past, examine what went wrong and how you can learn and grow? What are your assets, your strong points and envision your future self.

Look at your past and try to give positive interpretations to things/situations that led you to be stuck in life. You may feel what happened to you was bad, but you look at interpreting it differently that empowers you and you will definitely feel good. Believe in “Whatever happens, happens for the best”.

Find some trusted critics who tell u what you need to hear, not what you want to hear!

Get Unstuck and Grow

Love & Forgive yourself. Let go of the past so that u can grow to your potential thus leading a fulfilled life. Practice looking at the future with theLive your Life feeling that you have received today what you always wanted to achieve.

There will always be setbacks. This is the journey called Life. Know the fact that these are only temporary and how we evolve from those setbacks is our decision, choices that we make.

Live life on your terms, that you are aware, you know that things are going to get better.

Keep moving. Progress Fearlessly.

Goals Setting Strategies – Why setting Goals is important

We all know we need something out of life. But we fail to understand that life is not the destination. It’s a journey and like any other journey, there are destinations. Goals are nothing but the destinations we need to arrive at, to move further in our life.

As Lewis Carroll said – If you don’t know where you are going, any road will get you there!

Hence, it’s important that we set Goals to know where we are headed and where we want to arrive in the journey called Life

In this article, I will outline some strategies for setting Goals and this should give an overview of the kinds and categories of goals that we need to set for ourselves.

Setting Goals:Goal Setting

Let’s not procrastinate setting goals for ourselves as Goals give us direction to move and we need to keep moving to progress.

Outlined below are some strategies to set goals:

  • Have Enough Reasons
  1. Personal Reasons – Feel the joy, love, respect for yourself and something that motivates you and you believe that things will work for you; that you can do what you want to do.
  2. Family Reasons – Think of someone who has been your pillar of strength, someone who believes in you. It is time you find a good reason to give back that love and a sense of gratitude.
  3. Nitty Gritty Reasons – These reasons could be anything; what’s got you turned on; what’s got you turned off; anything that gives you sleepless nights; material possessions etc…
  • Long Range Goals – Learn to Dream. Dreams that you have been chasing but not wholeheartedly, not knowing where to begin! These are dreams that have always been in your subconscious mind but you never gave it enough fuel to burn and give you sleepless nights. Go for your Dreams…
  • Short Range Goals – This is something that you wish to do today, tomorrow, in the coming week, in this month! Have daily, weekly and monthly goals as these are milestones that get you to your Long range goal – Your Dream.

Categories of Goals:

To assist you further in the goals setting process, following are some categories in which you could set your Goals:

  • Economic Goals:

These are goals for your Money, Income, Business, Profits etc. You need to have goals for the money you would like to earn in a week, month and Year. This will help to remain focused on the tasks to help us achieve our goals

  • Material Things:

We all are mortal and have material wishes – beautiful home, great car and material pleasures. Make a list of all things that you wish to have and set a goal for those.

  • Personal Development:

Have a personal development goal for yourself – learn a new language, be a leader, be spiritual, be resourceful, learn new skills etc. This will help in developing your personality and make you feel good about yourself.

Acting on your Goals

Once you have set your goals, categorized them and set timelines, you need to act on those goals:

  • Write your goals:

Keep a journal with you and write those goals down. When you write them, you send out a signal to the universe that you are committed to your goals. You now have these goals on paper, to read them, to remind you of them and to go back to them every time you feel like quitting or when life knocks you down.

  • Work on your Goals:

You have to make plans and take action to make your goals come true. You can’t sit waiting for those goals to happen by themselves. Make a strategy and an action item to work towards your goal.

  • Check the size and kind of your goals

In management circles, you often get to hear the term – BHAG. Have a BHAG – Big Hairy Audacious goal. Think of a goal that’s beyond your comfort zone. Everyone can achieve a goal that’s within their comfort zone and that’s what 90% of us do. We look for something that we are comfortable with, that we know we can achieve. Why aim for something that we can do, instead aim for something that is beyond our skill set, beyond our comfort levels and this will give us a feeling of achievement when we get to those goals. Move your goalpost and feel the pain, the pleasure of achieving those goals!

Plan like an Adult and believe in it like a Child:

Define your goals very precisely and believe in them like a child. A child has limitless potential until the age of 3 wherein their minds are not conditioned by parents, teachers and the environment. A child does not give up learning to walk even after umpteen failures of falling and hurting. They know nothing but to achieve their goals!

Describe your goals by what you want and ask with all your intelligence and the universe and nature is all-giving and listening to you.

Planning is important but believing in your goals however big they may seem, is much more important to succeed and progress fearlessly.

You won’t get everything you want

Remember, you have your goals set, you have made all your plans, you believe in your goals and you are on your way to achieve them… but remember; you won’t get everything you want. Don’t be disheartened, don’t give up. Nature does have a unique way of answering our queries. Like I said earlier, life is a journey and there are plenty of destinations that we pass through. We like some, we dislike some. But we should enjoy this journey, keep setting goals as this is what will keep us going, progressing further and make us feel alive!

Progress Fearlessly….
